OBSCÉNICA: Contos d’Escárnio & Textos Grotescos

Hilda Hilst is, with Clarice Lispector, one of the greatest Brazilian writers of the 20th century. She is the author of an eclectic body of work, including fiction, poetry and theater. She also wrote some erotic texts “to amuse herself”. Hilda Hilst wrote for almost fifty years, and granted the most important Brazilian literary prizes. This section is part 1 of an anthology called Obscénica and contains texts written between 1991 and 1992.

With the publication of the erotic trilogy, Hilda Hilst renewed her artistic production. Despite keeping the complexity and language of of her previous narrative work, she is now using it in very different mood, using mostly metalanguage, in opposition to a carefully and pompous use of language of many of her counterparts. Contos d´escárnio & Textos grotescos are a great miscellany of short texts intertwined with the story of Crasso and Clódia; The narrative inside of the narrative creates the structure,the mîse en abîme. This great stylistic experiment became one of her most successful works.
